Carbon-Fiber Mascot Bed

Supporting foam shaping and composite layups for the athletic department’s carbon-fiber mascot bed.

February — May 2025Completed

Overview

MSU Athletics requested a lightweight carbon-fiber bed for its bulldog mascot, initially with provision for securing it in basketball-stadium seating. I supported the lead engineer through hot-wire foam cutting and composite layups; design and overall project ownership belonged to the lead engineer. The team delivered the bed, and Athletics used it at a basketball event. The proposed stadium attachment was not developed before delivery. This project represents my supporting fabrication contribution to a team outcome.

My Contribution

I assisted the lead engineer with hot-wire cutting the foam and carbon-fiber layups. My role was supporting fabrication; the lead engineer owned the design and overall project.

Engineering Approach

The team used shaped foam and composite layups to produce the bed structure.

Results & Current Status

MSU Athletics used the team’s finished bed at a basketball event. An informal team weight check exceeded the weight of a large bulldog. The proposed stadium attachment was not developed before delivery. These are team outcomes from a project to which I contributed fabrication assistance.
