Mill Key-Control System

Sectioned key storage supported by an Excel inventory, checkout log, and physical sign-out record.

December 2024 — January 2025Storage organized · Sustained adoption unverified

Overview

An unorganized mill key collection and lockbox made storage and accountability difficult. I applied 5S principles to sort the keys, keep two copies of each in the organized lockbox, and secure the remaining copies in labeled storage. An Excel inventory and clipboard update sheet linked key numbers, holders, and quantities to the physical arrangement. The storage and tracking materials were created during my internship, but the original records were not retained and sustained adoption could not be verified. No measured reduction in lost keys or retrieval time is claimed.

My Contribution

I sorted the keys, retained two copies of each in the organized lockbox, secured the remaining copies in labeled storage, and created an Excel inventory with key numbers, holders, and quantities plus a clipboard update sheet.

Engineering Approach

Physical organization and electronic records were designed together so key checkout and available-copy counts could be reconciled.

Results & Current Status

The storage and tracking materials were created during the internship. The original records were not retained, and sustained adoption could not be verified. No reduction in lost keys or retrieval time is claimed.
